Washingtons birthday ‘Observed’

That always kills me. What’s the point of ‘observing’ a birthday if they aren’t giving us some benefit of it like a paid day off or something like that?
The man was a great man and the day of his birth is when hit birthday should be observed. If we’re going to celebrate something, then let’s celebrate but what’s the point in just ‘observing’ it with no benefit? I guess someone somewhere benefits from that day but I sure don’t.
