True Story from Readers Digest

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard repairing the church and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. On the 21st, when the pastor went over to the church, his heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.

The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.  By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet. ‘Pastor,’ she asked, ‘where did you get that tablecloth?’ The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria. The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria.  When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home, which was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job.

Cher at Caesars Palace

I can’t believe that Cher Las Vegas is coming back to Las Vegas?  She’s replacing Celine Dion.  Can you imagine that?  I have always been a huge Cher fan.  In fact, I have an aunt that reminds me of Cher.  Needless to say, she’s one of my favorite aunts.  No it’s not because of who she looks like either.  She’s just a sweetheart, that’s why.  But Cher, now that’s what I call a complete woman.  She’s not only drop dead gorgeous but man can she sing too.

I guess about my favorite song she did was “If I could turn back time.”  The video wasn’t too bad either.  Only Cher could get away with wearing so little and make it look so good.  Here career has spanned 40 years which is longer than I have been alive.  Even with Sonny (who may have tried awful hard but I’m sorry, the man couldn’t sing) she was amazing.  I saw an old show that she was on singing “Half-breed” on the back of a horse, and I gained a new respect for horses that day.  You know, that’s one show I would make a special trip to Las Vegas to see and the only one at that.

While we’re on the subject of a Billion Dollars

While this thought is still fresh in our brainlet’s take a look at New Orleans. It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.  Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250  BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans.  Interesting number…what does it mean?   Well… if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528, or if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets  $1,329,787, or if you are a family of four…your family gets $2,066,012.  Washington, DC, ‘HELLO!’ are all your calculators broken??

Accounts Receivable Tax, Building Permit Tax, CDL License Tax, Cigarette Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Dog License Tax, Federal Income Tax, Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA), Fishing License Tax, Food License Tax, Fuel Permit Tax, Gasoline Tax, Hunting License Tax, Inheritance Tax, Inventory Tax, IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax), IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Luxury Tax, Marriage License Tax, Medicare Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Service charge taxes, Social Security Tax, Road Usage Tax (Truckers), Sales Taxes, Recreational Vehicle Tax, School Tax, State Income Tax, State Unemployment Tax (SUTA), Telephone Federal Excise Tax, Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax, Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax, Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax, Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax, Telephone State and Local Tax, Telephone Usage Charge Tax, Utility Tax, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax, Watercraft Registration Tax, Well Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax, not one of these taxes existed 100 years agoand our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt…We had the largest middle class in the world… and Mom stayed home to raise the kids. What happened?  Can you spell ‘politicians??’  But that’s just my opinion.  I am not downing or endorsing one party over another by any means.  I’m just looking at the bigger picture, or trying to anyway.  I’m all for helping those less fortunate than myself but there’s a hand up and then there’s a hand out.

Planning a special day for my Lady

I’m planning a very special birthday for my Lady.  Her birthday is in 3 weeks and I’m taking her to an elegant dinner, dancing, and a lot of romancing.  She deserves every bit of it and then some.  I wanted to make the evening even more special by finding her just the right evening dresses she could choose from.  I found a good selection, picked out a couple I thought she would be absolutely stunning in and showed them to her.  She loved them all so there’s 2 of them on the way.  Check out the site if you’re looking for something special.

Something to think about

The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politician’ spending your tax money.  A ‘billion’ is a difficult number to comprehend but one advertising agency did a pretty good of job of putting that number into perspective so that we could understand easier in one of it’s releases.

A billion seconds ago, it was 1959.  A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the stone age.  A billion days ago, no one walked on earth on two feet, but a billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes ago at the rate our government is spending our tax dollarsWith the economy like it is right now, $50 is a lot of money to most people but a billion dollars seems to be thrown around like pocket change.  I just hope who ever we elect in the next presidential election has a handle on what a billion of our hard earned dollars is worth.
