The Little Things I Do Each Day That Make a Big Difference
“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you will look back and realize they were big things.”
– Kurt Vonnegut *
You know, quite often, when we want to change something in our lives, whether it’s fixing a problem, chasing a goal, or finally setting out to achieve a dream, our minds jump straight to the big stuff.
The big or major changes we feel we need to make.
We picture the dream, the goal, the final destination… and then we look at where we are today.
We compare the two, see the gap, and convince ourselves we need some huge, dramatic shift to make it, something big enough to turn everything around and get us exactly where we want to be.
And it makes sense.
Big problems feel like they need big solutions.
Big goals feel like they require massive effort.
And getting to where we want to be usually does mean real change.
But here’s something extremely powerful many of us eventually realize:
When we look back at the most significant changes we’ve been through, the good ones and the tough ones, we start to see that it doesn’t really work the way we imagine.
Sure, a lucky few might “strike gold” and experience some massive, overnight transformation… but for most of us, that’s not how life goes.
Instead, it’s the small things we do every single day, the things we barely notice, that end up shaping where we go and who we become.
The small habits, the little choices, the quiet routines… the stuff that doesn’t look like much in the moment but somehow nudges us closer to our goals and dreams.
And for many of us, it’s simple things that make us who we are and help us not only reach our goals, but also enjoy the journey.
They’re simple.
They’re human.
They’re easy.
Just little things we try to do every day that somehow make everything smoother… lighter… better.
Now, these things can be different for everyone… but I thought it would be fun to share mine.
So here are a few things I do.
The small habits, daily actions, and personal routines that have shaped who I am and helped me reach my goals:
1. I Smile at People (Even Total Strangers)
I smile at everyone.
Friends, neighbors, people at the grocery store, the person pumping gas next to me, and yes, often at total strangers.
Why?
Because there’s already enough negativity floating around without me adding to it.
So why not spread a smile!
Plus, I like smiling; it makes me feel good and instantly changes my mood and my energy.
And, when I smile at people, they often smile back. It’s contagious.
So, as simple as it seems, it’s something I do naturally, and it helps me stay positive and spread happiness.
And there’s something funny about it, too:
Frowning actually uses more muscles than smiling. So why waste the energy?
Now, you don’t have to do what I do, but my point is that a simple, tiny act of positivity can ripple through your entire day and completely change someone else’s day without you ever even realizing it.
2. I Help People, Simply to Help Them
Every day, I do at least one, if not many, selfless things for someone else.
It could be for someone close to me, someone I recently met, a co-worker, or even a total stranger who needs help.
It could be a short phone call to give advice or listen to a friend who needs an ear.
It could be sending positive messages on social media or hosting a webinar to help people.
It could be something big, like attending a charity event or a community gathering.
And, it could be old-school and straightforward, like helping someone carry a heavy load or holding a door open.
There’s no agenda behind it.
No expectation of anything back.
I do it simply because it feels right.
Helping others without needing or asking for anything in return balances you.
It shifts your attention away from your own stress and reminds you that you’re part of something bigger than yourself.
Being good to others puts you in a better state of mind, so why not help others randomly and for no reason at all?
3. I Take Care of My Body
My body and my health are important to me.
Every day, I do my best to eat healthy, exercise, or move my body.
Some days it’s exercise.
Some days it’s a cold plunge.
Some days it’s an oxygen bath.
It doesn’t really matter what I do; what matters is that I do something.
Taking care of your body isn’t about perfection.
It’s about respect.
It’s about protecting the thing that carries you through everything you want to do.
And when I eat well and physically feel good, everything else becomes easier.
My mind is clearer.
My mood is steadier.
My energy is higher.
Reaching our goals starts with how we feel physically. When we take care of our bodies, they support everything else we want to accomplish in life.
4. I Spend Quality Time With My Wife and Family
Family is huge for me.
My sons don’t live with me anymore, but they’ll fly in for a weekend so we can spend time together.
At the end of my workday, I make a point of spending quality time with my wife, whether it’s just chilling at home, playing a round of golf, or taking a walk together.
And a few times a year, I see my family in Michigan or my wife’s family in Chicago. Or sometimes they fly down and visit us.
Those moments matter.
They slow life down.
They recharge me in a way no amount of caffeine or productivity apps ever could.
Being connected to the people you love gives you emotional strength, and that strength carries over into everything you do.
When our relationships are nourished, we feel grounded, and that steady foundation helps us grow and move toward the things we want in life.
And honestly, having healthy relationships with the people closest to us gives us support and encouragement during the moments we feel down, which is often what keeps us going.
5. I Spread Positivity — Every Single Day
If you follow me online, you already know: every day I post a positive message.
I post a motivational video and a quote every day.
I always try my best to put stuff out there that lifts people up.
And once a week, I write an article or film something deeper for YouTube.
Why?
Because the world needs more encouragement.
People need inspiration and motivation at times, and often education that helps them grow and improve.
Because positivity is contagious.
And because I genuinely love seeing people benefit from something I said or shared.
It fills me up.
It gives me purpose.
It gives me fuel.
When you put good energy into the world, good energy comes back into you, and that fires up everything you’re trying to accomplish.
6. I Watch Sunsets
Sunsets are one of my favorite things on earth (apart from golf).
I absolutely love sunsets.
I take pictures of them.
I soak them in.
They’re magical to me, and I’ll never apologize for how much I love them.
I don’t get to watch the sunset every day, but I do try to see it as often as possible. I’ll stop what I’m doing, step outside, and just be present for those ten minutes.
Now, you might not care about sunsets.
Maybe for you it’s music, or a walk, or a quiet coffee moment.
But here’s the truth:
Doing something every day that brings you joy is not optional; it’s essential.
A moment of pure joy resets your mind and fills you with the kind of energy that makes life feel lighter. And it doesn’t have to be anything big; even a few minutes doing something you love can lift your spirit and remind you why the journey is worth it.
7. I Read and Learn Something Every Day
I read daily, or learn something daily.
Sometimes it’s a book.
Sometimes it’s listening to something inspiring or educational.
Sometimes it’s a video that challenges how I think.
Learning is the foundation for growth.
It opens our minds, gives us new perspectives, and helps us understand the world and ourselves a little better each day.
And the best part is, even a small amount of learning daily can add up to huge improvement over time.
A growing mind stays motivated, curious, and focused.
8. I Play Golf (Not Daily… but Weekly)
I love golf.
If I could play daily, trust me, I would.
But most weekends, I’m out there.
Golf gets me outdoors, moving, and connecting with people.
It’s fun.
It’s competitive.
It’s social.
It’s a break from the seriousness of life.
And that break resets me.
It makes me happier.
Which, surprise!, also makes me more productive when Monday rolls around.
Now, you don’t need to play golf.
May you hate golf.
But everyone should have an activity they genuinely enjoy, especially one that involves movement or other people. Joy + connection + movement = a better version of you.
Look, you don’t need to do everything I do.
You don’t need to love sunsets, golf, healthy food, or daily quotes.
That’s not the point.
The point is:
There are small things you can do every day, simple, human things, that make your life better and, almost accidentally, make you more productive and will help you grow and reach your goals.
Because remember, big change isn’t usually about some massive transformation happening overnight, it’s almost always about the small things we do, day in and day out, that over time build into a new version of us and ultimately the person we want to become.
It’s about balance.
It’s about energy.
It’s about joy.
It’s about taking care of your body, your mind, and your relationships.
When your life feels good, you naturally perform better.
Not because you’re forcing it…but because you’re aligned.
So find your own little things.
Protect them.
Enjoy them.
And let them shape your days in a quiet, powerful way.
Here’s to the small things in life that make all the difference.
