If There’s Even a 1% Chance… Go For It: Why You Should Never Give Up on Your Dreams

August 5, 2026

Have you ever talked yourself out of something before you even started?

Maybe it was a relationship you hoped would become something more.

A business you dreamed of building.

A career you couldn’t stop thinking about.

A place you always wanted to live.

Or perhaps there was simply a dream that kept finding its way back into your thoughts.

For a while, it seemed exciting. You imagined what your life might look like if you actually achieved it.

Then something happened.

Reality showed up.

Almost instantly, your mind began calculating the odds.

“It’s probably never going to happen.”

“Someone else could do it, but not me.”

“It’s a nice dream, but I should be realistic.”

And just like that, the dream quietly disappeared before it ever had the chance to become reality.

If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

In fact, most people don’t abandon their dreams because they lack talent or ability. They abandon them because they convince themselves the probability of success isn’t high enough to justify taking the first step.

The problem is that history tells us a very different story.

Every Ordinary Thing Was Once Impossible

Take a moment and look around your home.

The lights above your head.

The smartphone in your pocket.

Your television.

Your computer.

GPS.

The internet.

Artificial intelligence.

Modern medicine.

Commercial air travel.

Every one of these was once considered impossible.

Not difficult.

Impossible.

At one point, every one of them existed only in someone’s imagination.

They were ideas that most people dismissed.

Dreams that seemed unrealistic.

Possibilities that didn’t match the probabilities.

Yet today, we barely think about them.

They’ve become ordinary.

That should tell us something incredibly important.

Today’s reality is often yesterday’s impossibility.

Probability Doesn’t Always Tell the Whole Story

One of my favorite examples is the Miracle on Ice in 1980.

The United States Olympic hockey team faced what many believed was the greatest hockey team ever assembled.

The Soviet Union had dominated international hockey for years.

On paper, the Americans had almost no chance.

The statistics weren’t on their side.

The experts weren’t on their side.

The odds certainly weren’t on their side.

Yet they stepped onto the ice anyway.

They didn’t win because the odds suddenly changed.

They won because they refused to let the odds determine the outcome before the game had even begun.

Life works the same way.

Too often, we allow probability to make decisions that possibility should be making.

Possibility Is More Powerful Than Probability

Think about every entrepreneur who started a company in a garage.

Every athlete who was told they weren’t good enough.

Every inventor who failed dozens—or hundreds—of times before succeeding.

Every author whose manuscript was rejected over and over again.

None of them knew how their stories would end.

If they had waited until success became probable, they never would have started.

Instead, they believed in the possibility of success more than they believed in the probability of failure.

That single shift in thinking changes everything.

Probability asks,

“What are the chances?”

Possibility asks,

“What if?”

One limits you.

The other moves you forward.

Don’t Wear Your “Reality Glasses”

what are

One of the ideas I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is something I call our “Reality Glasses.”

They’re the invisible lenses we all put on from time to time.

They convince us to judge our future only by what seems logical today.

They whisper things like,

“People like me don’t do things like that.”

“The odds are too small.”

“It’s probably never going to work.”

The problem isn’t reality itself.

The problem is that we often mistake our current perspective for absolute truth.

Sometimes those glasses prevent us from seeing the possibilities right in front of us.

When that happens, the dream doesn’t fail.

It never even gets the chance to begin.

It’s one of the most common ways we quietly talk ourselves out of the life we truly want.

What If Success Were Guaranteed?

Here’s a different way to think about it.

Imagine I told you that you were absolutely going to achieve your biggest dream.

Whatever it is.

You would get there.

Guaranteed.

There was only one condition.

Before you reached it, you would have to endure 100 rejections.

One hundred setbacks.

One hundred moments where it looked like you had failed.

But once you reached number one hundred…

Your success was guaranteed.

Now ask yourself this.

How would you feel every time someone rejected you?

How would you feel every setback?

Would you become discouraged?

Or would you smile, knowing you were simply one rejection closer to your goal?

Nothing about the rejection changed.

Only the meaning you gave it.

That’s exactly how persistence works.

Every setback becomes part of the journey, not evidence that you should quit.

Most People Quit Too Soon

One of the hardest truths I’ve learned is this.

Most people don’t fail because their dream was impossible.

They fail because they stopped before they discovered what they were capable of.

Some quit after the first setback.

Others spend years waiting for the perfect moment.

Many never begin at all because they convince themselves the timing isn’t right.

But there is rarely a perfect moment.

There is only the decision to begin.

The people who accomplish extraordinary things usually aren’t extraordinary when they start.

They simply continue after everyone else has decided to stop.

Taking the First Step Changes You

Now, I can’t promise that every dream will come true.

No one can.

Life doesn’t offer guarantees.

But I can promise you something else.

If you never try…

It never will.

The moment you decide to go for it, something begins to change.

You learn.

You adapt.

You become more resilient.

You discover strengths you never knew you had.

You become someone capable of things the old version of you couldn’t have imagined.

Sometimes achieving the dream is only part of the reward.

Who you become while chasing it is often the greater gift.

So, if there’s something you’ve been thinking about…

A goal quietly sitting in the back of your mind…

A dream you’ve nearly convinced yourself to forget…

Don’t let probability make the decision before possibility has had a chance.

Take off the reality glasses.

Take one step.

Then another.

Then another.

And just remember that this is the price of growth.

History has always belonged to people who were willing to believe in something long before the rest of the world believed with them.

Remember this:

The impossible doesn’t become possible because the odds change. It becomes possible because someone decides it’s possible.

And perhaps the next impossible story…

Will be yours.
